What is Preventative Dentistry?
Preventative dentistry focuses on preventing the development of dental cavities. Cavities are more likely to occur when good oral hygiene is not practiced. A dental cavity occurs when you have a build-up of decay, formed by bacteria, on your teeth. This decay eats away at the tooth. Dr. Yau must remove the decay to prevent it from progressive damage to your teeth. Dr. Yau will fill the cavity with a tooth colored composite resin. The goal of preventative dentistry is to prevent the need for restorative dentistry procedures.
Dental Cleanings and Exams
At Sunrise Dental Studio, we recommend that you come into our office every six months for a dental cleaning and exam. We will first examine your teeth and their current condition at the cleaning and exam. If there are no issues, we will proceed with the cleaning.
First, a dental hygienist from Sunrise Dental Studio will clean the tartar and plaque off your teeth with a scalar. You can remove plaque at home with a soft-bristle toothbrush, but only a dental hygienist can remove tartar/ calculus in the dental office. Next, she will polish your teeth with professional toothpaste. This toothpaste is more rigid than your toothpaste at home and removes all bacteria, plaque, and stains. Lastly, she will rinse and floss your teeth.
An optional treatment we offer is fluoride. Fluoride is painted on your teeth and chemically helps strengthen the enamel. We also recommend that you purchase toothpaste and mouthwash that includes fluoride. By adding this to your daily routine, you can strengthen and brighten your smile and resist cavities.
Sealants are an optional way to prevent cavities and strengthen your teeth. Sealants are placed on the back molars of your teeth. They consist of a composite resin, a solid plastic-like material. To apply the sealants, they are painted on your back molars and then dried with a blue light. After applying, they help prevent cavities by sealing the deep pits and groove of your teeth where bacteria can harbor.
Dental Care at Home
It is important to brush, floss, and use mouthwash twice a day. To properly brush your teeth, you should:
- Brush all sides of your teeth and your gums.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove bacteria, debris, and plaque from your teeth.
- Remember technique and time spent brushing is more important than how hard you brush. Brushing too hard can cause recession and tooth damage.
- Brushing your teeth this way is the best way to prevent cavities.
There are many ways to use preventative dentistry to protect your teeth from bacteria and the development of decay. You can use preventive dentistry with Dr. Yau at Sunrise Dental Studio. Remember, one of the essential components of good oral hygiene is brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash twice a day.
